MINNASSIST

Pregnant in Minnesota? You can likely get health coverage.

A family of 2 (you and your baby) can earn up to about $5,013 a month and get Medical Assistance (MA). Coverage lasts 12 months after the pregnancy ends. MinnAssist helps you apply for free, by phone. Call MinnAssist at (866) 655-6606.

A pregnant person counts as at least 2 people: you plus each unborn baby. Limits from DHS (form DHS-3461A), effective July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. Income is monthly, before taxes. Call us even if you're a little over. Some income doesn't count. (This is 278% of the federal poverty guideline.)

What to know

  • Immigration status doesn't stop most pregnant people. If you are undocumented or can't get regular MA, you may still get pregnancy coverage (CHIP-funded MA) if you don't have other health insurance. You don't need a Social Security number or proof of immigration status for it.
  • Earn more than the limit? You may still qualify after paying some medical bills yourself (a spenddown).
  • Your baby is covered from birth through the end of the month of their first birthday, if you were on MA or emergency-only coverage (Emergency Medical Assistance) when the baby was born. No new application is needed. Report the birth so the baby's coverage can be set up.
  • We help you apply, report the pregnancy or birth, and keep coverage going after the 12 months.
